Tuesday Packing Crew

First of all I want to say thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve at the food4kids summer program. I met some wonderful, caring people, and I look forward to being part of the program again next year.
— Mary McGrath

2026 Volunteer Opportunities:

7:30 - 9:30 AM, MEAL PREPARATION: Work in the kitchen preparing fresh-made lunches under the supervision of the Kitchen Manager. This is a fairly fast-paced, production line making nearly 900 lunches every morning!

9:30 - 10:15/10:30 AM, PACKING LINE: Work in assembly line fashion to pack lunch bags and load them into coolers. You can combine with early morning Meal Preparation, late morning Food Preparation, or a Dump Run to make efficient use of your time.

10:30 AM - 12:30 PM, FOOD PREPARATION: Work in the kitchen helping prepare ingredients for the following day under the supervision of the Kitchen Manager. A more relaxed pace compared to the early food preparation, tasks may include cooking, washing/cutting fresh fruit, dividing bulk packs into single-serve, breaking down boxes, etc.

1-2 hours, DELIVER MEALS: Deliver meals to sites across the Lower and Outer Cape. Pick ups range from 10:00 am - 11:30 am depending on the destination. Consistency is key to get familiar the routine at each particular site, so we encourage you to sign up for the same site for an entire week or on a particular day each week.

Flexible, Daily RECYCLING RUN: Pick up recycling (mostly cardboard, some plastic/tin) and take to your town’s recycling center.

10:30 AM - 12:30 PM, DRIVE + SERVE Wednesdays at Truro Library or Brewster Ladies Library: We need 2-4 consistent volunteers for this once/week opportunity. Pick up packed coolers, drive to one of the libraries and serve lunch to the kids. A 1-hour Site Supervisor training is required.

The tool for volunteering is great and all the descriptions of what is required of us as volunteers are very direct and explicit, and the reminder emails too. Excellent work!

NEW Roles

9:15 - 10:45 AM, PACK LINE LEADER: We need 1 leader who can run the pack line, ensuring packing procedures are following to maintain SafeServe temperatures, accurate counts for each meal site location, and keeping a fast-paced operation.

11:15 AM - 12:35 PM, SITE SUPERVISOR for Grab&Go: We need 2-4 people maximum who can consistently act as the daily Site Supervisor for our Grab & Go at The Church of the Holy Spirit. A 1-hour Site Supervisor training is required.

Flexible, BOOK EVENTS: Be a Literacy Hero! In an effort to cut waste, we’ve removed free book tickets from lunch bags. Instead, we will host special Free Book Days at our meal sites.

  • HOST with a friend: We need 2 strong and smiling faces to set up the event at the meal site, help children choose books to take home and enjoy while school is out for the summer, and then pack up.

  • SELECT + PACK: We need someone who can select appropriate books based on age, pack crates of books and move them to get ready for distribution.

Flexible, MEAL SITE MONITOR: We need 1 consistent smiling and courteous individual support our Program Manager with required USDA and MA DESE meal site reviews. The volunteer position involves driving to a lunch site and, using a checklist, observing lunch service to ensure Site Supervisors are following USDA guidelines. Before monitoring a site, you are required to complete a recorded 30-minute training. You are responsible for providing your own car and gas.

I was more than happy to help out with Food 4Kids a couple of times. It helped me learn about support to families that I never knew was there. What a wonderful organization!

Thank you for coordinating this program that benefits so many families in our Cape community. As an educator it was comforting knowing that my students had access to two meals a day with the help of this program. I look forward to working with you again next summer.
